Kinhaven Junior Session Faculty
Robert Blaine, Brass, Jr., received his BM from Indiana U., his MM from Catholic U. and his DMA from Eastman. He has studied with Edwin Anderson, Milton Stephens and John Marcellas. He has served on the faculties of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and Eastman School of Music. He is presently Associate Professor at Jackson State University iin Mississippi, and performs with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.
Sandy Dennis, Piano, Jr., received her BM from Oberlin and MM from The Juilliard School. She has studied with Beveridge Webster and Arthur Dann. She now teaches at the Community Mudic School of Springfield, MA. and the Williston School. She performs regularly throughout the New England Area.
Kathleen Foster, Viola/Violin, Jr., is an active chamber music
and orchestral musician in New York City, Philadelphia and surrounding areas.
Her current freelance activities include performances with the New Jersey
Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola, National Chorale
Orchestra and the Scandia Symphony. She also performs with the Pennsylvania
Ballet Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. She has played
for Broadway shows and has toured with the American Symphony Orchestra and
the New York City Opera. She also performs with the Lake George Opera Festival.
Ms. Foster is a member of the Kinor String Quartet which recently performed
at Bargemusic and Symphony Space in New York City. Other chamber music appearances
include performances with the Orion Music Ensemble, Central Vermont Chamber
Music Festival, and the George Street Players, which performance was noted
in the New Jersey Star Ledger as “one of the most memorable performances”
of the year, with a “drop-dead gorgeous viola solo”. Ms. Foster
holds a Master of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music and a Bachelor
of Music degree from the University of Utah. Her princpal teachers include
Michael Tree, John Graham and Mikhail Boguslavsky.
Jubal Fulks, Violin, Jr., has performed solo, chamber and
orchestral music throughout the United States at venues including Carnegie
and Alice Tully halls, as well as throughout Europe. He recently completed
the DMA program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where
he was recipient of the Ackerman award for excellence in performance. While
there, he performed the Alban Berg Violin Concerto with conductor Gunther
Schuller as a result of having won the graduate concerto competition. An avid
contemporary music performer, Mr. Fulks participated in the International
Festival for Contemporary Performance at the Mannes School of Music in New
York, where he performed with pianist Ursula Oppens, violinist Curtis Macomber,
and members of Speculum Musicae. At the other end of the historical spectrum,
he has performed Early Music with soprano Dawn Upshaw, harpsichordist Arthur
Haas, and various period music ensembles around New
York.
Dr. Fulks has won the National Federation of Music Clubs and American String
Teachers Association competitions, and has performed concertos with the N.C.
School of the Arts and Raleigh Symphony Orchestras. Dr. Fulks was a recipient
of an Emerging Artist Grant from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Arts Council,
and was Fellowship violinist for the Aspen Music
Festival’s Contemporary Ensemble. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Fulks
served for three years as Assistant Concertmaster of the Greensboro Symphony
Orchestra while earning degrees at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
His most recent position was in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as concertmaster
of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Copper Country
Suzuki Association. He is also a faculty member at the
Kinhaven Music School in Weston, Vermont.
Martha Knieriem, Viola/Violin, Jr., studied at Hartt College, Ithaca College, the University of North Carolina, and the Eastman School of Music. Her principal teachers include Heidi Castleman and Scott Nickrenz. She teaches at the Deerfield Academy, the Williston-Northampton School, Smith College Campus School and the Community Music School of Springfield. She performs with the Hartford Symphony.
Kenneth Kwo, Viola, Jr., was a double major in math and viola at Oberlin College and went on to the University of Iowa to earn his Master's degree in viola. His primary teachers were David Becker, Kathryn Plummer and William Preucil. Ken has been a member of the Florida Orchestra since 1984.
Amber McPherson, Violin, Jr., is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts where she was a student of Kevin Lawrence. She has lived in Germany since 1999 where she continued her studies with Kolja Lessing, Ariadne Daskalakis, and Jens Ellerman. She is currently specializing in early music performance practice at the Leipzig Hochschule fur Musik und Theater.
Peter Schultz, Flute, Jr., Peter Schultz is on the faculty
of Phillips Exeter Academy, where he teaches music theory, coaches chamber
music and conducts the Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. He completed his
Doctorate in flute performance at Manhattan School of Music in 2002 as a student
of Michael Parloff. He has been a winner of the New York Flute Club’s
young artist competition and the National Flute Association’s Professional
Performer’s competition.
After completing his Master’s degree at SUNY at Stony Brook with Samuel
Baron, Peter joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music’s pre-college
division. He continued his study of the flute for many years with Eleanor
Lawrence and as a regular participant in the seminars of Marcel Moyse. An
active freelancer for many years, Peter has performed with the Bergen Philharmonic,
Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, Bethlehem Bach Festival, and the New Hampshire
Symphony. Peter teaches and performs at Kinhaven’s Adult Chamber Music
Workshop, and both the Junior and Senior sessions.
Mary Watt, Oboe, Jr., received her bachelor and masters degrees
from The Juilliard School, where she was the winner of the Walter Naumberg
Orchestral Prize. She studied with Ronald Roseman at Juilliard, Richard Killmer
at the Aspen Music Festival and with John Mack prior to coming to Juilliard.
After teaching at Virginia Tech University she returned to New York where
she was active as a performer with orchestras, chamber music groups and on
Broadway. As Principal Oboe with the Bethlehem Bach Choir she has performed
at Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall and recorded several CDs. Since moving
to New England she has continued to teach and perform, playing regularly with
the New England Bach Festival, and New Hampshire, Vermont and Springfield
Symphonies. She teaches oboe and coaches chamber music at Phillips Exeter
Academy. In addition to teaching oboe at Kinhaven’s Senior and Junior
sessions, Mary directs the Adult Chamber Music Workshop.
Gabrielle Wunsch, Violin, Jr., earned her BM from Eastman School of Music and her MM from SUNY Stony Brook Her principal teachers include Zvi Zeitlin, Mitchell Stern, and Pamela Frank. She recently served as concertmaster of the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. As a baroque violinist she hs plyaed with the New York Collegium,Apollo's Fire, and the Camel Bach Festival in Califormia.She lives in Barcelona where she freelances and studies the baroque violin with Manfredo Kraemer at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya.
Naho Tsutsui, Violin, Jr., the origin of Japan, is an active recitalist and a chamber musician in the Metropolitan area. She is a member of the Transfiguration Ensemble, the resident ensemble in New York, and the Contemporary Chamber Players. She has given solo and chamber music recitals throughout the United States, Japan, Germany and Bulgaria. Her live performances have been featured nationally on WQXR and the Bulgarian National Television. She received her Bachelor of Music from the North Carolina School of the Arts where she was a winner of a numerous scholarships and the Concerto Competition. She received her Master of Music from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where she is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts on full scholarship. Her principle teachers include Kevin Lawrence, Mitchell Stern, Pamela Frank and Philip Setzer. She is on the faculty at the Ross School in East Hampton, and was the former Artistic Director of the Saturday Academy at Ross.
Vanessa Young, Cello, Jr., is a DMA candidate at SUNY Stony Brook where she studies with Colin Carr and performs on baroque cello as well as modern. She earned her MM from SUNY Stony Brook with Timothy Eddy, and her BM from the North Carolina School of the Arts as a student of Robert Marsh. She has recently performed at the International Baroque Institute of Longy, and London masterclasses, along with the Amherst Early Music Festival.
