Recording Tips | Faculty
Each year 70 middle school age musicians take part in our two week long Junior Session. Co-directed by Sandy Dennis and Marty Knieriem, our dedicated faculty of professional musicians works to match students with chamber groups and orchestral repertoire that challenge and delight them. Every piece our young artists study and rehearse culminates in public performances which happen weekly on Saturdays and Sundays.
Each student receives at least one private lesson per week, but often
teachers meet more frequently with students to review their progress, help them prepare the week’s repertoire, and encourage productive practice habits. The faculty reside on campus during the sessions and everyone shares delicious, home-cooked meals together.
The Kinhaven Junior Session accepts 70 students from grades 4 through 7. Violists, bassists, wind, and brass players currently in the 8th grade are also eligible.
The 2014 Junior Session will run for two weeks from Saturday, August 9th through Sunday, August 24th. Students are accepted for the entire time only.
Tuition for 2014 will be announced soon. To make a secure online tuition payment, click here.
Each year, funds are allocated for tuition reduction. These funds come from foundations, individual donors and other sources. The generous gifts to the Annual Fund by alumni and friends are a significant part of this effort. Accordingly, financial aid is available to qualified students who demonstrate fiscal need. If you would like to attend Kinhaven, but are concerned about the tuition, we invite you to apply for financial aid. Please contact the Junior Session Directors directly with any questions or for more information. Link to Contact Page.
How and When to Apply
To apply to Kinhaven, you must submit to the admissions office (address below) a completed application and either include an audition recording or arrange for a personal audition. Kinhaven begins accepting applications and recordings after January 1. Applicants are accepted until each class is filled, which usually occurs by the end of March. We are happy to supply information about openings at any time. Link to online application.
On your audition recording, you should record 5-10 minutes of a representative work of your choosing. Both audio and video recordings are welcome. Please send your recording (along with your application) in a padded envelope. Refer to Recording Tips for further instructions.
Live auditions are offered in various cities—please consult the Announcements Page for updated information, dates and locations.
